History: Project Oikos was initially conceived by a group of concerned entrepreneurs, who felt that a concentrated effort by all individuals of this world, young and old, from developed or developing countries, is necessary to eliminate the growing threat of global warming. Action and awareness are the key factors in this fight-- and what better way to instill the carbon neutral value in us all, than to engage in “roll up your sleeves” planting activities as a community. We can make this difference together.

Where we plant: We have held successful planting events in the Philippines and Malaysia. We hope that through all of our efforts, we can develop the momentum necessary to reach a green Asia.

What we teach: Project Oikos is dedicated in developing an awareness of the worlds growing CO2 crisis. We believe that to make a difference, each individual needs to understand and take proactive steps to minimize his or her carbon footprint. Carbon is a “cost” in each of our lives. Much like gasoline and electricity, we as individuals, need to be aware of how much each of our actions cost us in terms of carbon output. It is not enough to just be concerned. This fight needs to become a part of our daily lives. Project Oikos works closely with different communities and municipalities in the Philippines and Malaysia to develop planting events that involve volunteers of all ages. We support and involve different green initiatives in our Project Oikos planting events, to develop a unified front in this battle towards carbon neutrality. This fight, our fight, is for awareness and change.

Types of trees that we plant: We currently have a growing nursery of Fire Trees and Mahogany Trees. We purchase trees and contract labor services at fair trade values, determined by international market rates.

The Oikos Tree: Each tree represents the efforts of a community through the action of one. Dedicate a tree to your loved ones and friends and help spread the message of awareness.

Contact Us: Project Oikos has representative offices in Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Hong Kong and Beijing. If you would like to become more involved with Project Oikos, please send us an email at plantomorrow@projectoikos.com

Accurate and verifiable carbon readings are still being developed. Carbon readings can vary due to climate, lifestyle, geography, and a number of other variables. Project Oikos has pegged our 2008-2009 direction with the following benchmarks:

  • Global average is 4 tons of carbon emissions per year per person.
  • Deforestation accounts for 20% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Rainforest destruction alone accounts for as many CO2 emissions as the USA (6 Billion Tonnes per year).
  • Trees act as a carbon sink primarily through photosynthesis but also indirectly through a cooling effect, reducing heat and lessening the power consumption needed by our homes and offices.
  • The average person has a yearly carbon footprint of 4 tons. A fully grown tree will roughly offset 10.25 kilos of carbon per year. This means each individual requires roughly 391 trees to offset his or her yearly carbon footprint.
